Wigner's Space-Time Symmetries Based on the Two-by-Two Matrices of the Damped Harmonic Oscillators and the Poincaré Sphere

چکیده
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group Sp(2). It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features ofWigner’s little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for massive and imaginary-mass particles respectively. When the system makes the transition from the oscillation to damping mode, it corresponds to the little group for massless particles. Rotations around the momentum leave the four-momentum invariant. This degree of freedom extends the Sp(2) symmetry to that of SL(2, c) corresponding to the Lorentz group applicable to the four-dimensional Minkowski space. The Poincaré sphere contains the SL(2, c) symmetry. In addition, it has a non-Lorentzian parameter allowing us to reduce the mass continuously to zero. It is thus possible to construct the little group for massless particles from that of the massive particle by reducing its mass to zero. Spin-1/2 particles and spin-1 particles are discussed in detail.

Numerical solution of second-order stochastic differential equations with Gaussian random parameters
In this paper, we present the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (or SDEs), from each order especially second-order with time-varying and Gaussian random coefficients. We indicate a complete analysis for second-order equations in special case of scalar linear second-order equations (damped harmonic oscillators with additive or multiplicative noises). Making stochastic differe...
متن کاملGazeau- Klouder Coherent states on a sphere
In this paper, we construct the Gazeau-Klauder coherent states of a two- dimensional harmonic oscillator on a sphere based on two equivalent approaches. First, we consider the oscillator on the sphere as a deformed (non-degenerate) one-dimensional oscillator. Second, the oscillator on the sphere is considered as the usual (degenerate) two--dimensional oscillator. Then, by investigating the quan...
متن کاملClassifying the Epilepsy Based on the Phase Space Sorted With the Radial Poincaré Sections in Electroencephalography
Background: Epilepsy is a brain disorder that changes the basin geometry of the oscillation of trajectories in the phase space. Nevertheless, recent studies on epilepsy often used the statistical characteristics of this space to diagnose epileptic seizures. Objectives: We evaluated changes caused by the seizures on the mentioned basin by focusing on phase space sorted by Poincaré sections. Ma...
متن کاملSymmetries Shared by the Poincaré Group and the Poincaré Sphere
Henri Poincaré formulated the mathematics of Lorentz transformations, known as the Poincaré group. He also formulated the Poincaré sphere for polarization optics. It is shown that these two mathematical instruments can be derived from the two-by-two representations of the Lorentz group. Wigner’s little groups for internal space-time symmetries are studied in detail. While the particle mass is a...
متن کاملA Modified Energy Balance Method to Obtain Higher-order Approximations to the Oscillators with Cubic and Harmonic Restoring Force
This article analyzes a strongly nonlinear oscillator with cubic and harmonic restoring force and proposes an efficient analytical technique based on the modified energy balance method (MEBM). The proposed method incorporates higher-order approximations. After applying the proposed MEBM, a set of complicated higher-order nonlinear algebraic equations are obtained. Higher-order nonlinear algebra...
